Murder Final Part :
In the final part of Murder by Arnold Bennett, the story unfolds in the billiard room of the Bellevue, where the body of John Franting lies untouched under harsh green lights. Superintendent of Podesh and a detective sergeant are investigating when Dr. Austin Bond, a famed amateur detective, arrives unexpectedly, substituting for his friend Dr. Farnival. Bond quickly assesses the scene, noting the time of death, the bullet’s trajectory, and a cigarette at the fireplace. The superintendent proudly presents clues—fingerprints, footprints, and torn cloth on the window frame—leading to a theory that the murderer entered and exited through the window. However, Bond questions this narrative, suspecting the hall porter of lying and requesting to speak with the carwoman who discovered the body. Upon examining her, Bond finds she has only three fingers on her left hand, a torn skirt, and a boot with a hole—matching all the supposed clues. She breaks down, revealing herself as the murderer. Bond explains he had noticed her missing finger earlier and suspected from the start that the killer hadn’t used the window but was still in the room, hiding in plain sight.
