Bathtubs have a long history, dating back thousands of years! The earliest known personal-sized bathtub was discovered on the Isle of Crete, made from hardened pottery around 3300 BC. Ancient civilizations, including the Greeks and Romans, had elaborate bathing rituals, with private marble tubs and grand public bathhouses.
The clawfoot tub, a popular design in the 19th century, originated in the Netherlands in the mid-18th century, possibly inspired by Chinese artistic motifs. The modern bathtub took shape in the late 19th century when John Michael Kohler transformed a cast-iron horse trough into a bathtub by adding decorative feet and an enamel finish.
Over time, bathtubs evolved from cast iron and porcelain to acrylic and fiberglass, offering more design flexibility and convenience. Today, they come in various styles, from freestanding luxury tubs to built-in models designed for efficiency and comfort.
